"Girl Performing an Arabesque" came about completely random one night before falling asleep. I suddenly imagined a curly-haired girl performing an Arabesque, but instead of wearing a tutu, she was wearing a life jacket. That very night, I created the image and decided to set it on an Italian coastline, with an overturned boat and bodies scattered along the shore. The girl has a vacant look, not facing the viewer, and her lighting is inconsistent with the scene: she's lit as if on a stage, with an artificial light behind her that highlights her within the setting.
